Located alongside familiar parklands and local amenities in Sorell, the new wing at Uniting AgeWell Sorell Community, Ningana reflects a thoughtful response to modern ageing, introducing contemporary spaces while preserving the comfort, connection and homeliness that matter most.
Rather than reading as an addition, the new wing integrates seamlessly with the existing community, extending it in a calm, cohesive and grounded manner. Inspired by its setting on the edge of Hobart and nearby semi‑rural areas, the design reflects a natural rhythm of living that strengthens connections between residents, community and landscape.
This approach is reinforced by Uniting AgeWell’s investment in the Ningana expansion, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing aged care through both environment and amenity. The $24 million development includes shared facilities such as a café, family club lounge, bar, hairdressing salon, chapel and multipurpose spaces.
Uniting AgeWell CEO Andrew Kinnersly noted the project has “raised the bar,” in residential aged care, forming part of over $98 million the organisation has invested in infrastructure across Tasmania in recent years. Responding to the growing needs of an ageing population, the development emphasises high-quality, community-focused care.
Within this context, the interior environment brings these principles into everyday life. Light-filled spaces, garden outlooks and generous shared areas support both independence and connection. Intuitive layouts prioritise daily living, while open, welcoming communal spaces encourage residents and families to gather with ease and informality.
The fabrics selected echo this connection to place, drawing on Australian references in colour and pattern. Wayfinding is subtly integrated through these textiles, with each house distinguished by its own colour, while remaining visually connected through a consistent fabric language, creating familiarity while supporting orientation.
Crown Furniture’s contribution centres on creating comfortable, durable spaces that support ease of living. Indoor lounge areas are anchored by the Edie Lounge range, introducing colour and pattern to reinforce the design scheme, while the Mialla Armchair paired with the Manhattan Table encourages relaxed, communal dining.
In café spaces, the Freya Armchair brings comfort with a timeless aesthetic, while outdoors the durable Reef Armchair is paired with the Biscay Bistro Table to create inviting settings that encourage residents to spend time outside and remain connected to their surroundings.
This project builds on a longstanding collaboration with Uniting AgeWell, shaped through the delivery of multiple large-scale communities including Uniting AgeWell, Strathaven and Preston Community. Across these projects, a shared commitment to thoughtful, high-quality outcomes is reflected, supported by consistency, reliability and a deep understanding of aged care environments.
The completed wing strengthens Uniting AgeWell Sorell Community, Ningana’s role as a place of belonging, where thoughtful design, carefully considered furnishings and a strong connection to place come together to support daily life with dignity, comfort and ease.
