A significant step forward in mental health care, the new unit at Peninsula University Hospital brings together therapeutic design, calming environments and carefully considered spaces that support recovery, dignity and human connection.
On 20 January 2026, Frankston Hospital entered a new chapter with the opening of its redeveloped mental health unit within Peninsula University Hospital. Part of the landmark, the facility reflects a shift toward recovery focused care supported by thoughtful design.
Located on Level 6 of the new 12-storey tower, the mental health unit at Peninsula University Hospital has been carefully designed to create a welcoming and therapeutic environment. Private single rooms offer patients personal space and a quiet retreat, while large open areas encourage therapy, activities, and social connection. Internal courtyards provide access to fresh air and natural light, creating moments of calm throughout the day.
The hospital’s Level 1 Emergency Department Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs Hub has also been furnished to support fast access to care in crisis situations, ensuring that therapeutic environments extend from the point of entry through to inpatient services. Crown Furniture collaborated closely with the project team to provide tailored furniture solutions for both Level 1 and Level 6, designing bedrooms, shared lounges, activity areas, and waiting spaces that balance safety, durability, and comfort with a softer, more residential aesthetic.
The unit delivers acute inpatient treatment and includes a dedicated five bed emergency department mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub, enabling rapid support for people in crisis. Within these spaces, furniture plays a subtle but important role in supporting recovery and emotional wellbeing. Plexa Robust Single and 2-Seater Lounges bring warmth and familiarity to shared areas, encouraging relaxation and connection. Ryno Club Chairs and Dining Chairs provide strength and reliability while maintaining a residential feel that reduces the sense of institutional formality. Fuso Side Tables offer durable and practical surfaces wherever they are needed most.
The outcome is a cohesive, recovery-focused environment where patients feel safe, respected, and supported, and staff can focus on care without compromise. At one of the Mornington Peninsula’s leading teaching hospitals, the new mental health units demonstrate how thoughtful design and carefully selected furniture can actively support recovery, foster emotional wellbeing, and create spaces that truly care for people.
