Corrections

South Australia’s largest metropolitan correctional facility, Yatala Labour Prison, unveiled a 270 Bed redevelopment, enhancing amenities and a new state-of-the-art security system to align with modern correctional practices and improve functionality.

In a recent article published in Adelaide’s The Advertiser newspaper, “It’s more like a Uni than a prison” was used to describe the redesigned prison. This headline ironically holds some truth when one shifts their thinking from punishment alone to rehabilitation.

The creation of normalised prison environments reduces the negative effects of incarceration and acknowledges the community’s role in rehabilitating individuals and addressing the harm caused by criminal behaviour to the broader community, families, and friends.

Collaborating with renowned architect Sarah Paddick from Total Space Design and Grieve Gillett Architects, the Yatala Labour Prison redevelopment project began in November 2020. Crown Furniture was selected to furnish the new facilities, aiming to create well-designed environments that meet the needs of both inmates and staff.

The Yatala Labour Prison’s redevelopment signifies a notable advancement in creating a rehabilitative and humane environment, supported by enhanced facilities and furniture from Crown Furniture’s Secure range.

Crown Furniture’s Secure Ryno range played a prominent role in furnishing the facility. Aside from Ryno’s robust features, a key contributor to the facility’s design is the Ryno’s colour palette. In a recent study published for the International Conference on Contemporary Education, Social Sciences and Humanities (2018), it outlines the positive effects of environmental colour design on prisoners’ psychological treatment, “to solve their psychological block to reduce anxiety, depression & panic to change their non-adaptive behaviour.”

With its robust features and colourful design aesthetic, the range use included Ryno dining chairs, tables, single lounges, coffee tables, and stools, it proved ideal for challenging high-risk environments. The range was utilized in indoor and outdoor activity areas, as well as communal and dining areas, ensuring security and safety for both inmates and staff.
