When Pine Doesn’t Mean Fine
During its early years, Crown Furniture used pine wood in creating furniture. Pine is a softwood commonly used in furniture making, known for its durability, affordability, aesthetic appeal, and workability. While pine offered certain benefits to furniture design, it did not meet the demands of daily use in high-care facilities. Its lighter structure and higher maintenance requirements proved challenging over time.
These challenges sparked the desire to redefine furniture design with purpose.
Unfolding a New Chapter of Designing with Care
In the late 1990s, visits to aged care facilities revealed the impact of cold, lifeless plastic and steel furniture on the daily lives of elderly Australians. The experience was eye-opening, they deserved better.
Crown Furniture recognised that true care begins with thoughtful design. We embraced the belief that a combination of natural wood, cushioning, and quality fabrics could transform these spaces into warm, comforting environments. In our early years, we worked with pine wood but soon realised it couldn’t meet the demands of high-use environments.
Through innovation in the early 2000s, we refined our craft, sourcing materials from Italy and introducing European Beech timber, a hardwood renowned for its elegant grain, strength, and durability. This pivotal step marked the beginning of a new era in Australian aged care furniture design.
Discovering European Beech Wood
Strength That Lasts
Strength and stability are essential in furniture designed for aged care, retirement living, healthcare, and mental health environments. European Beech timber offers exceptional durability, with a Janka hardness rating of 1,450 lbf, ensuring furniture maintains its integrity even under heavy daily use. Its robust structure resists wear, dismantling, and alteration, delivering long-term safety and reliability across every facility.
Workability
European Beech timber not only offers superior strength but also remarkable versatility. Compared to softwoods like pine, it allows for intricate craftsmanship and precise detailing. Our expert makers can shape smooth, rounded edges that enhance both the aesthetic and the safety of each piece ensuring every item is not only functional but purpose-built with care in mind.
Safe and Hygienic
Maintaining hygiene and safety is critical in any care environment. European Beech’s tight, even grain allows for a smooth finish that, when paired with Crown Furniture’s anti-microbial coating, offers superior moisture resistance and reduced susceptibility to decay. This combination minimises bacterial growth, helping create a cleaner, healthier environment for residents, patients, and staff alike.
Value for Beauty
European Beech timber offers a balance of strength and elegance. Its natural versatility supports fit-for-purpose design, while its refined grain, soft colour variations, and smooth texture allow for a wide range of finishes. Whether stained, lacquered, or oiled, each piece showcases craftsmanship that celebrates both form and function.
Beyond aesthetics, research published in the Health Environments Research & Design Journal (HERD) highlights the therapeutic benefits of timber in care settings helping to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and support healing. By incorporating natural timber tones, Crown Furniture helps create warm, homely, and calming environments that nurture well-being and comfort for every resident.
Superior Material for Sustainability
At Crown Furniture, sustainability underpins every decision we make. We use only FSC-certified European Beech hardwood, ensuring our timber comes from responsibly managed forests that protect biodiversity and support ethical labour practices.
We’re also certified to the ISO 14001:2015 international environmental management system, continuously improving our performance to minimise environmental impact. Timber offcuts are recycled and donated to the local community. Through these initiatives, we strive to care not only for our clients but for the planet we all share.
Quality that cares through the years
To this day, Crown Furniture remains committed to crafting furniture that balances durability, beauty, and purpose, designed not only to endure but to uphold the respect and dignity that elderly Australians truly deserve.
Our continued use of European Beech timber reflects our unwavering dedication to innovation, care, and craftsmanship, values that have defined Crown Furniture for decades. We design with purpose, creating furniture that stands the test of time and continues to enhance lives for generations to come.
