In 1974, Richard Martin was an accountant with a craftsman’s heart. Driven by a desire to build something lasting for his family, he founded Supercraft Wood Products, a small operation with big ambition.

What began in a modest Leichardt workshop soon became the foundation of a fifty year legacy in Australian furniture making. Crown Furniture has become one of Australia’s leading designers and manufacturers of furniture for residential aged care, retirement living, healthcare, and mental health. The business’s success is reflected not in scale, but in the trust built, the environments shaped, and the people served.

For us, furniture has never been just about function, it’s always been about care, and giving people the dignity and respect they deserve.

From Humble Beginnings to Building with Purpose

The early years were far from easy. While reaching that Australian dream of stability through hard work, there were high inflation, rising costs, and even a bushfire that devastated a key supplier’s factory in the late 1970’s. But rather than folding, we rebuilt, driven by the belief that we were creating something with purpose.

Although Richard has to move forward from Supercraft, he founded Tern products in the 80s. Going back to his roots of creating furniture that is quality made and of good value.

In the late 1990’s, as the next generation joined the business, that belief sparked a pivotal change in Crown Furniture’s approach. In visits made to residential aged care facilities, furniture felt cold, clinical and impersonal. Older Australians deserved better, furniture that provides warmth, comfort, dignity, and spaces that made them feel at home.

That moment reshaped the path of the business. It was a moment that moved us deeply and made us realize that there was more to offer, so residents could experience the care they deserved. With this, Crown Furniture shifted from mass-market retail to focus on designing furniture specifically for care environments that nurture both the physical and emotional well-being of residents.

Built for the Realities of Care

Lester in 1999 took the responsibility to move the business forward to new heights. Our journey into residential aged care wasn’t just a rebrand but a complete transformation.

Taking on our first major aged care project for Montefiore, we redefined our understanding of care and design. Some of the pine products then had some challenges in meeting the demands of daily use, leading us to adapt. We introduced stronger materials like European Beech timber, refined our manufacturing processes, and committed to long-term quality. These lessons, though hard-earned, became the foundation for everything we create today.

More importantly, we started designing with not just our clients, but also for the nurses, facility managers, therapists, architects, and residents who all shared their insights, helping shape every detail. The result was furniture that was safer, smarter, and better suited to the demands of residential aged care, memory support, and rehabilitation settings. Collaboration remains at the heart of everything we create today.

Proudly Australian-Made, Supporting local communities

In 2006, we built our own manufacturing facility in Emu Plains, at the foot of the Blue Mountains. It gave us full control over quality, production flow, and innovation while keeping jobs local. We believe in supporting Australian suppliers and relying less on offshore manufacturing.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, those choices kept Crown Furniture moving, while others faced supply challenges.  This allowed continued support for residential aged care homes, hospitals, and mental health services when they needed it most.

Our strong commitment to serving these sectors continues to guide us today.

A Family Legacy of Care, Evolving Across Generations

Over five decades, three family generations have shaped Crown Furniture’s evolution. From the humble first wooden stool to full-scale fit outs across the country, each chapter has brought new levels of insight, creativity, and commitment.

With the younger generation stepping in today, Crown Furniture is looking ahead with fresh energy. This focuses on expanding to meet the growing needs of retirement living, alongside residential aged care, healthcare, and mental health. Our dedication to sustainability and inclusive design ensures that our products are not only thoughtfully crafted, but durable as well.

Rather than chasing trends, we focus on creating environments that make people feel supported, respected, and at home at every stage of life.

Lessons from 50 Years of Care and Commitment

In this industry, the smallest details make the biggest difference.

The height of a chair arm. The warmth of the timber finish. The contrasting hues that support residents with dementia. The way they interact with their surroundings. Through the years, we’ve learned about the real essence of fit-for-purpose design; to listen beyond what is needed, to what is felt.

As we celebrate 50 years of dedication to crafting healthcare furniture, we are not only reflecting on our past but recommitting to our future.

Crown Furniture was built to last, not just in materials, but in purpose.

Furniture in care settings is not just something people sit on, eat at, or walk past. It helps shape daily experiences and wellbeing, fostering a sense of safety, respect, and comfort.

Today, our purpose goes beyond aged care. We create environments that care, across retirement living, residential aged care, hospitals, mental health, and corrections. Wherever people need comfort, dignity, and safety, we are there.

More than being furniture makers, we are care providers, through thoughtful design, attention to detail, and a legacy built over generations.

This has always been at the heart of Crown Furniture, designing with care and purpose.
