A transformative step in mental health care, the Northern Hospital now delivers state-of-the-art facilities with therapeutic spaces and patient-focused design that redefines how care is experienced and delivered.

The Northern Hospital in Epping, Victoria, serves one of Victoria’s fastest-growing communities, providing care across the northern suburbs and surrounding regional areas. With one of the state’s busiest emergency departments and a rapidly expanding population, the hospital plays a vital role in delivering responsive, high-quality healthcare. Following recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, it has also become a designated mental health service, now the third largest in Victoria.

In August 2023, a new state-of-the-art mental health facility was completed, expanding the hospital’s ability to provide immediate, person-centred care. The purpose-built facility includes 30 single-person bedrooms with ensuites, therapeutic and recreational rooms, sensory and de-escalation spaces, internal courtyards, and family lounges. With this expansion, The Northern Hospital can now provide acute mental health care to an additional 655 Victorians each year, responding to critical and growing community needs.

Furniture selections were considered as carefully as the architecture itself, with every piece contributing to the therapeutic intent of the facility. Crown Furniture supported the project through the provision of practical yet welcoming solutions, furnishings that integrate seamlessly into each environment while prioritising safety, comfort, and adaptability. From communal gathering areas to staff and family spaces, these choices have been designed to nurture calm and connection, complementing the clinical expertise delivered by the hospital.

The result is an environment shaped not only for treatment but also for dignity, respect, and recovery. By creating spaces that feel safe and familiar, The Northern Hospital continues to place people at the centre of care, ensuring patients and families alike can move forward with a stronger sense of hope and wellbeing.
